C4C put seven years of work and $90,000 of cash on the table in order to incentivize a $26M grant application from Boulder County to the United States Department of Transportation to fund construction of three miles of the North Foothills Safety Project and Bikeway.  In order to satisfy the grant requirements, Boulder County, CDOT, Governor Polis’s office, and The City of Boulder together promised over $5M to the local match.

The current government shutdown is delaying the response as to whether Boulder County has been awarded the  grant.  Keep in mind, the $165M Highway 119 Diagonal Boulder – Longmont Project that is currently under construction and will be finished in 2027 is making great progress towards transportation that is safe for everyone.

C4C’s position is to stay the course because the alternative of inaction is too costly.  The North Foothills Corridor Safety Project including the separated bikeway remains urgent, crucial, and important.

Urgent because as long as the current conditions exist, the serious injuries and fatalities will continue.  Crucial because the connectivity along US 36 North Foothills Highway links vital routes for all types of user.  Important because Boulder County’s Transportation Master Plan is a demonstration of how network multi-modal design-use of right-of-way delivers mobility, safety, and comfort for all.

Based on empirical data and design, the North Foothills Safety for All Project improves roadway safety, improves the bus service on the corridor, gets cyclists out of the way of drivers, and links everyone to where they want to go in a safe manner.

Consequently, C4C’s plan remains focused on progress towards solutions for Boulder County’s future.

  • Stay the course on the North Foothills Corridor Safety Project and Bikeway
  • Explore supporting interim projects
  • Advocacy for policy that improves mobility, safety, and comfort for all users
  • Partnering to achieve these goals

In the meantime, C4C is working on its plans for Crank It Forward 2026.  Crank It Forward is the big party where we all celebrate the bike community and support C4C’s work.  Thanks for supporting the work that makes Boulder County a great place to live that is safe for cyclists and for everyone.
