The nonprofit Cyclists for Community, 501(c)(3) has hired Matt Muir as the organization’s Operations Manager. After a period without paid staff, C4C’s board of directors had time reflect on its operations and goals. As current board president Rob Andrew concluded, “we are a volunteer board and in order to effectively pursue our mission we need a paid staff person to get things done.”
C4C was founded by and grew out of avid cyclists’ Russ Chandler and Rob Andrew’s partnership with communities affected by the 2013 floods, principally Jamestown, Colorado. Chandler explains “I wondered how it was going in Jamestown after the floods so I spoke with Jimtown’s mayor, Tara Schoedinger. Area cyclists may have been having a recreational problem after the flood but Jamestown was having an existential problem. I thought the cycling community could help and helping, it turned out, had great results for the community as a whole.”
Muir, a long time Boulder area resident, has a varied background. With his second child on the way, he departed CU-Boulder as a lecturer teaching Spanish language and linguistics to raise his children. He volunteered heavily for the Boulder Nordic Club, a small nonprofit. He also volunteered with close friends within Argentina’s nonprofit Club Andino Ushuaia in efforts around the CAU’s Marchablanca and Ushuaia Loppet nordic ski events. Cross Country Skier Magazine and Mountain Magazine contracted Muir as a freelance author. More recently, by his own report, “I’ve been in a very long episode of This Olde House restoring our 1904 home” where he lives with his wife and two children.
“What really drew me to C4C is its ethic of constructive partnering and collaboration for the benefit of the community and cycling” stated Muir. He can be reached via https://www.coalition4cyclists.org/.
