C4C is working to get re-started on its main goal of funding a feasibility study for a bikeway between Boulder and Lyons. The pandemic disrupted the initial funding structure but now, thanks to partners, C4C is exploring the possibility of continuing with the grant application and corresponding matching funding. More to come on this.
In the interim, when you support C4C, you pay for a staff person. That person has built and maintains relationships. Those relationships serve as partnerships. When Boulder County realized it could apply hastily for an area governmental grant for safety improvements it was, in part, the presence of the partnership that made it possible to write one of the required community letters of support to the granting committee.
What would be the product if the grant is awarded to Boulder County?
- Site 1: US 36: 5th Ave to Apple Valley Rd: striping modifications to widen the shoulders/bike lanes and create more space for bicyclists, including the use of skipped striping at intersections to designate a space for bicyclists.
- Site 2: High Street and Railroad Ave: 5th Ave to 3rd Ave: Creation of EB and WB bike lanes (a one-way couplet) which will serve as an alternate bicycle facility to US 36 in downtown Lyons, which is too narrow to accommodate designated bicycle facilities. Related striping modifications and signage.
- Site 3: US 36: SH 66 to 2nd Ave: striping modifications to widen the shoulders (from 2’ to 4-5’) and create more space for bicyclists, as well as highlight the location of bicyclists at intersections and driveways through the use of skip striping. Narrow travel lanes from 12’ to 11’ in both directions to reduce motor vehicle speeds and create more room for additional shoulder and bike lane width.
- Site 3 continued: US 36 & SH 66: striping modifications to preserve the bike lanes through the intersections and highlight the locations of bicyclists as they cross the EB to SB and NB to EB right turn slip lanes. Potential creation of a NB “bike box” to improve visibility of left turning NB to WB bicyclists at the intersection.
- Site 4: US 36 & Hygiene Rd: striping modifications and signage to highlight the location of bicyclists in the intersection, and creation of a southbound shoulder where none currently exists. Elimination of unnecessary SB bus acceleration lane and creation of two stage WB to SB left turn movement for motor vehicles.
- Site 5: US 36 & St Vrain Rd: striping modifications and signage to highlight the location of bicyclists traveling northbound through the intersection. Creation of two stage WB to SB left turn movement for motor vehicles.
- Site 6: US 36 & Nelson Rd: striping modifications and signage to highlight the location of bicyclists transitioning from the outside shoulder to the left portion of the NB right turn lane, and traveling NB thru the intersection.
- Site 7: US 36 & Lefthand Canyon Dr: striping modifications, related signage, and minor shouldering work in the median on the north side of the intersection to increase the shoulder width and highlight the bike lanes through the intersections at conflict points with turning motor vehicles. Shouldering work will include a culvert extension and embankment material. Potential elimination of the NB and SB passing lanes, and creation of a two-stage EB to NB left turn movement for turning vehicles.
For years it has been a refrain in board deliberations at C4C, “…if we can save one life, it matters.” In partnership with our community and local governments, C4C is working on it.
Thanks for supporting C4C.
